Chapter 7

My head is throbbing and my arm hurts. What is that awful beeping noise? Definitely not helping this hangover. I open my eyes and the memories come back. Where am I?

My senses returned, and I opened my eyes to realize I am in a hospital bed. The beeping noise is some machine with wires stuck to my chest. I see a grey remote with a red button that says ‘Nurse,’ and I press it.

“Nurse's station,” I hear from somewhere.

“Can someone come here and tell me what is going on?” I yelled out.

Moments later, a woman in blue scrubs entered the room, “Glad to see you’re awake, how do you feel?”

I looked at the woman, “My head hurts, and my arm feels stiff. What happened?”

She looked at the clipboard, wrote something down, and then her attention turned to me, “You had a mild concussion and you scraped your arm on something.”

I remembered what happened, “How did I get here?” I asked.

“Your husband brought you to the emergency room on Friday night. You have been unconscious until now.”

“My husband brought me here?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“Is… is he here now?” I asked.

“I saw him earlier today. He has been coming and going to check on you.”

“Coming and going? How long have I been here?”

“It’s Sunday about 630pm,” she replied.

“I have been out for two days?”

The nurse nodded with a look of concern, “You’ll be fine. Your body just needed to heal itself.”

I looked around the room and saw a bag of mine. I sat up. Dizzy.

“Hold on there Mrs. Turner,” and she eased me back against the pillow.

“Did he bring my purse?” and I pointed to the chair with the bag.

The nurse went to the closet and found my purse hidden behind another bag of mine. She handed me the purse. It was difficult with one hand to open the zippered compartment but I managed and found my wedding ring and slipped it on my finger. I suddenly felt better and calmed down.

The nurse looked at me, “Are you hungry? It’s late but I’m sure I can get you dinner or a sandwich.”

I wasn’t sure if I was hungry or not but then, I felt my stomach growl, “I think I am a little hungry. Also, I think I need to use the bathroom,” I said.

“Let me help you get up,” the nurse said and expertly lifted me to the side of the bed. Moments later I was standing, a little dizzy but I can make it. I walked with her slowly to the bathroom carrying an IV pole on wheels. I went into the bathroom and closed the door.

“I’ll be right outside when you’re done.”

“Thank you,” I replied.

When I finished the nurse helped me back to the bed. I felt exhausted with just that little exertion.

I looked at the nurse, “Do you know how long I have to stay here?”

The nurse looked at the clipbook, “the Dr. will be in tomorrow morning. If you are feeling ready, I am sure he will release you to your husband's care.
